Mushroom Cupcakes
Frost your cupcakes red or green. Add white spots. They can be mini marshmallows, white m&m’s, mentos, or any other white candy.

DK Mountain Volcano Cupcakes
Frost the cupcake brown. Add orange frosting at the top coming to a peak to look like a volcano. Blend in to the brown. You have a volcano cupcake! NOTE: This could be used for a regular cake too!

Star Cupcakes
Frost your cupcakes lightly. Then pipe a yellow star a fill in with yellow frosting. Add two black eyes.

Mario Kart Edible Image Cupcake Toppers
To really spice up your cupcakes you can add edible image toppers which are easily transferred onto each cupcake.

Steering Wheel Cake
A round cake is naturally in the shape of a steering wheel! Simply add the spokes and the birthday message! You can get a little fancier and add some Mario Bros. figurines on top too…or add a few checkered flags to spice it up.

Mario Kart Character Cake
A fun and easy way to make a Mario Kart cake is to create a race-track and place Mario Kart figurines on the top. Remember, the tracks around Mario Kart really vary, so you can’t really mess it up! Simply ice the cake white and using black (or dark) icing create the track. The place the figurines on the cake in various locations as if they are racing. You will want to place a piece of aluminum foil on the bottom of each figurine so they aren't ruined afterwards. Or if you are concerned about messing the figurines up just add the Super Mario Bros. characters to the cake. The kids will love the fact that they get a character with their piece!

Star Cake
This is possibly the easiest cake that you will ever make! Simply take a star cake pan, frost the whole cake yellow and add jelly beans for the eyes. The kids will know exactly what the cake represents and it'll turn out fantastic!

Edible Image Cake Topper
A very simple and great looking cake is a Mario Kart edible image cake. Using one of the images below you apply it to a cake that has been iced with white icing. The image transfixes itself to the icing and makes a great looking image on the top of the cake. You can even customize many of the images below!

Mylar Gold Star Balloons
To decorate the air consider adding mylar gold star balloons. These are a great addition as the Gold Star is the 'invincible' item for all Super Mario games! To make them look like the star in the game you can take black paper cardstock and add eyes to them.

Decorate the Entrance
It all starts as the kids walk up to the door. If at all possible, have some of the balloons attached to the mailbox and a foam board character or Mario Kart cardboard cutout meeting the kids at the doorway. You can even chalk up a race path coming up to the front door. Have the Mario theme music playing as the kids walk through the front door. Have the balloons, steamers and curly ribbon leading the way from the front door to the party area. If possible, let the kids stop and have their picture taken with their favorite character. You can do this by either having a few people dress up in Super Mario costumes or by having a Mario Kart cardboard cut-out (or standup) which they can pose beside. Either option makes a great to addition to their thank you card or Mario Kart party favors.

Add colorful confetti and gold star confetti to the table where food will be served and any other party areas as well. Have a large sign over the food area that says “ PIT STOP – FUEL UP HERE!!!” Add checkered flags from fishing line above the food table. If you have any smaller pictures of the Mario Bros characters, put a Mario Bros. character in between each checkered flag. Put a checkered flag tablecloth down to cover the table. You can use either primary color plates and checkered napkins or Mario Kart themed paper plates, napkins and cups. If you choose the Mario themed option than consider a Mario Kart party pack as you receive all the decoration items, tableware and more in a bundle which ends up saving you money!

Finally, don't forget to add your Mario Kart pinata to the party. A pinata is a great multipurpose party supply as it can help decorate the room plus sometime during the party you can add it to the Mario Kart party games. Kids love the idea of hitting an object and having candy come out and who can blame them?

Mario and Luigi’s Italian Restaurant
Well, Mario and Luigi ARE Italian, so it is the easy and logical way to go! You can go with pizza, which most kids are good with. Add in some mozzarella sticks with marinara sauce and some fun pasta like twisty pasta and maybe other fun shapes and you really just can’t go wrong. Try some of the pasta with marinara and some with just butter and Parmesan cheese. Have the adults dress up and Mario and Luigi and serve the kids. Make it FUN if you decide to go this way!

If this seems just too easy and you want to mix it up a little, here are some other fun ideas.
Bowser’s Burgers – Make slider burgers for the kids and let them fix them up with their own topping.
Toad’s Taco Bar – Have all the fixings out and pre-made taco shells – it makes it very easy for picky kids to only put on what THEY like.
Princess Peach Cups – slice peaches and pour 7-up or ginger ale over the top of them. Chill before serving – best to get a little frosty before you serve them to the kids – kind of slushy. It’s the perfect Mario Bros twist. It looks like one thing, but is very different!
Donkey Dong Jr.’s Frozen Bananas – It’s one of those things that every kid has wanted to try, but few kids have! Take a banana, dip it in chocolate syrup and freeze it. Leave it whole. For some reason it’s more fun that way.

Bowser’s Fireball Punch
The red makes it fiery, but the bubbly of the sherbet really make it a fireball! If possible, go the extra mile and make melon ball size circles of the sherbet
Ingredients
• 1 Liter Red Hawaiian Punch
• 1 Liter Ginger Ale
• 1 Quart Rainbow Sherbet
Mix together and serve in a large bowl chilled.

Finally, don't forget your paper plates, napkins and cups to make your clean-up MUCH easier. Place plastic garbage bags at a few locations so that everyone just throws their plates out when they're done and half the clean-up will already be complete! You can purchase Mario Kart paper plates, napkins and cups instead of normal plain paper plates.

Homemade Mario Kart Party Favors
If you’re looking to make your own favor holder, you can use a 4X4X4 box from your local craft store and put a colorful question mark on them. They look just like the boxes that the drivers run over to get their power ups!

Another option is to take red and green gift bags from your local party store or dollar store and either put Mario World characters, or put a steering wheels on them, or checkered flags or simple mustaches. Tie them with lots of colored curling ribbon and you have a very festive favor bag!

If you’re making a homemade favor bag, the next question is what to put in them. There are a few things that make it fun and easy for the boys to be Mario or Luigi for Halloween next year! You can find a sheet of stick-on moustaches. Cut them in to individual moustaches and put one in each bag or box.

Mario and Luigi hats are also great favors. They can be hard to find, but aren’t too hard to make. You can pick up the white painters hats pretty inexpensively at your local home improvement store. Use RIT dye to color them red or green and then cut a circle of white fabric and use double sided tape to secure to the hat. Add the M or L with a marker or iron on transfer and you are set! You can put the hats in the bags or put the boxes in the hats for the favors.

Star shaped Lollipops (or Star Shaped Chocolates) are great to add. So are small race cars or even Wii remote control candy containers. Find anything else that has to do with the power ups or racing. The power ups would be bananas, turtles (from the shells), stars, lightening bolts or mushrooms. Anything from the dollar or party store with these or racing items would be perfect for fillers!

It’s always fun to add in any fun pictures from the birthday party if you can. While the kids are eating or enjoying the birthday cake, see if you or another adult can sneak away and print off a couple of pictures and sneak them in to the favor boxes or bags! Especially any of the whole group with the birthday boy. This works great if you have a Mario Kart cardboard cutout to take the group photo.

If the group is older, a VERY fun birthday favor is a Venus fly trap to signify those pesky piranha plants!! Now THAT is a favor they will never forget! If you can, paint the pot with some polka dots.

With your homemade party favor we recommend adding a few Mario Kart themed party favors with your other party favors. This can be as simple as a Mario Kart Pez dispenser, Mario Kart coloring book or Mario Kart Sticker sheet but this ads that unique flair to the your party favors. From there you can simply add some candy and neat erasers and you'll have party favors that they'll definitely love!

Have the Kids Collect Coins
This is a little bit of a morph between Super Mario and Mario Kart, but in all the games there are “mini games” that add up to one winner. In Super Mario Kart, the points are added up after each race to figure out the winner. The following games are planned to be hosted in this manner where you give out chocolate coins for each event and at the end the person with the most coins wins! You can also give kids coins for just participating too, so they at least have chocolate at the end!!!

Let the games being!

Yoshi’s Egg Race
Take eggs and decorate them with green spots – that makes them Yoshi’s eggs. This is a great activity for the kids as they arrive at the party! Have a classic egg race. Have a spoon race with eggs that have been decorated with green spots! Split the kids into even teams. They will race with an egg on a spoon relay style. The first place team will get 4 coins each, 2nd place 3, etc. depending on how many teams you have.

Relay Race
You’ll need to get some supplies for this race – One team will be Mario and one team Luigi. You’ll need to get some stick on moustaches, two sets of overalls (get them at the Goodwill store, but make them big enough to fit the largest child), two sets of boots (galoshes will do), two sets of white gloves, a red shirt, a green shirt and red ball cap and a green ball cap. You can also purchase a Super Mario costume but this doesn't work as well as it's usually a one-piece jumpsuit and you're trying to create a fun relay race.

Count off the kids by 1’’’s and 2’s and try to mix up the teams a bit from the last game. Each team will be split in to two again. Each half facing each other a good 25 feet away from each other. Each team will have one set of clothes in front of them. When you say go, they will have to put on the clothes, run to the other teammate, tag them, take off the clothes, the other teammate will put on the clothes, run back, tag the other teammate, etc. The first team to get all the way through wins. The winning team gets 4 coins each, losing team gets 2 each.

Dry Dry Desert Race
One of the races in the Mario Kart is the Dry Dry Desert. It’s a race against the sand. Hopefully the weather is nice enough that you can do this outdoors! If not, maybe the garage or the kitchen table or a large floor – your choice! Take large trash bags and put them in front of each boy and give each of them a plastic cup. We recommend using either sand, dirt or even brown sugar for this game. Have them fill up the cup (tightly), dump it over and using a butter knife, carefully carve a Turtle shell. They have 3 minutes to do it without it crumbling. If they can do it they get 2 coins. If not, they get 1.

Blooper Toss Race
Those darn squids that squirt ink and you can’t see when you’re racing! Split the kids in teams of two. Fill black balloons with water. The kids must throw a water balloon to each other without it popping. Start the kids all at the same line and toss. If they catch it without it breaking they throw it back and continue along till it breaks. You can also gradually get further and further apart until the balloons aren’t caught. It’s a race – so make the pace quick! First place team gets 4 coins.3rd place gets 3 2nd place gets 2 and all others get 1.

Kuppa’s Krazy Races
Break the teams up in to 4 equal teams. At your go they will have to run up and turn over one of 4-6 pieces of paper (depending on how many kids you have coming). Some of the tasks can include: sing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star or unwrap and chew a piece of gum and blow a bubble or do 3 summersaults or act like a chicken while you bark like a dog for 30 seconds. Have fun, and make them wild and crazy and make the boys stretch a little! It’s a relay. First place team gets 4 coins each down to one.

Winners Ceremony
WHEW….okay, now the kids will be about ready to be done playing! Have them all count their coins. Remember, if you've mixed the teams up the amount of coins should be fairly spread out. Now you will go to the trophy ceremony!! Have all the kids gather around a give a prize to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place coin winners. The winner could receive a Mario Plush Doll, second could get Mario 3-D candies and third could get a large chocolate bar. This is also a good time to pass out the party favors that way everyone gets a prize!

Mario Kart Video Game Tournament
Of course you CAN have a Super Mario Kart tournament, but it’s really hard depending on the numbers of guests you have. I would only suggest that you do this if you have eight or fewer guests, and even that may be tough. Restless kids are never a good thing! Here are some other games that may be a bit more fun. Friends can always come over later one on one to play Mario Kart! We are going to do a full write on how to hold a good Mario Kart tournament so check back for those details or let us know how you did it (or planning to do it) for your party!

Personalized Mario Kart Invitation
Another option to consider is the personalized version of the Mario Kart invitation above where you can add a photo of your child in the card. Although this option costs a bit more it cuts down on the work of having to write in each card individually!

Homemade Mario Kart Invitation Ideas
If you’re looking for a little more creativity and willing to go through a bit more work, here are some additional ideas.

NES Super Mario Kart Invitation
Go down to your local video game exchange store. You can pick up some old NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) cartridges for a pretty good price. Cover the front with a label with colored fonts with the birthday info telling them it’s a Super Mario Kart birthday. It adds a retro video game vibe to the party (parents may have to explain what the cartridge is to some of the younger kids!).

Steering Wheel Invitation
Another idea is to use a large circle cutter to cut a large circle from a heavy while cardstock. Make a simple steering wheel on one side. On the other side put the birthday detail information. OR…You could cut a smaller circle and put the birthday information on that and glue a few pieces of star confetti to the card.

Moustache Party Invitation
To make an easy home made invitation, take red or green cardstock (Mario and Luigi colors) and draw a simple moustache on the front. On the front, print or print a label in the opposite color (red or green) that says: “Mario and Luigi invite you to _________’s Super Mario Kart Birthday Party. On the inside give the details of the party. It’s simple, but the moustache is iconic of Mario and Luigi. Oh, and don’t forget to add that star confetti inside!

Checkered Flag Invitation
For another unique idea get checkered flags from your local party story or dollar store. Get a large label and print out the following (in a colorful font of course!): “Race over to __________’s Super Mario Kart Birthday Party!!! Include the rest of the birthday party details. Of course, you can also purchase a checkered flag invitation if that's what you're looking for but don't have the time to create your own.
